Meeting modern needs
Since its launch by Unilever in 1990, the Persil washing up brand has expanded to include a greater variety of fragrances and product choices. And, most importantly, Persil has been listening to what people want from their washing up liquid, ensuring Persil meets modern needs for easy-to-use, fast-working cleaning products.
How it all started
- After years of getting laundry whites 'whiter', Persil applied its considerable cleaning expertise to the task of getting dishes cleaner. In 1990, the company launched Persil washing-up liquid with the slogan 'Now Persil washes more than just your clothes'. The formulation was a thick green concentrate, developed, manufactured and packed at the Port Sunlight factory.
- In 1995 consumer-driven innovation resulted in changes to bottle design, variants and fragrance such as Citrus Burst. For ease of use, Persil created a non-slip bottle with handgrip feature. The clear bottle was introduced so that people could see when the liquid was about to run out. The last improvement for the century was the introduction of the "Natural Extracts Aloe Fresh" variant, launched in 2003.
Did you know?
- The first ever washing up liquid was accidentally discovered during the Bronze Age when wood ash from a fire got mixed up with animal fats! It produced a frothy lather which was found to have a great cleaning effect.
